How much is a share?
A share consists of approximately 60 lbs. of meat, delivered in monthly increments of 20 lbs. This provides an average of 5 lbs. of meat per week, typically enough to feed two adults.
Can I buy meat by the piece?
We do not sell out meat by the piece. But we do offer half shares, which you can learn more about on our CSA Signup page.
Additionally, if you have limited freezer space or just want to pick up a few cuts to grill, you can purchase a limited selection of steaks and ground meats at Prigel Family Creamery.
Why is the beef not bright red?
When beef is packaged for sale in the large chain stores, the packages are injected with carbon monoxide, which turns the meat bright red. We do not alter the meat during packing.
Why is the beef and lamb marbling a darker shade of yellow and not white?
Our animals are free to eat grass, and grass contains beta carotene that gives the fat an orange or dark yellow tint.
What do you mean by “raised properly”?
Properly means many things.
The food the animals consume should be what they were meant to eat. Cattle and sheep are herbivores and are ruminants; they are meant to eat leafy greens (grass, weeds, and leaves). They not designed for a grain diet. Grain makes their rumen acidic (it should be pH neutral, and it causes all kinds of health problems for them and us when it’s not). Pigs are mono-gastric (like humans) and are omnivores; they can eat anything.
The environment in which the animals are raised should be consistent with their behavioral needs. Cattle and sheep are herd animals. Leaving them by themselves stresses them out. They are hard-wired to know that there is safety in numbers. They are healthier and happier in fresh air, grazing at their leisure. Packing them into a building and stuffing them with corn is unnatural and causes physiological stress. A stressed animal is upsetting to observe and results in off-tasting meat, which is tainted by adrenalin.
Pigs naturally want to roam and root. Allowing them this option reduces their stress. They can forage for greens, roots, grubs, and nuts. Our pigs can snack on hog feed but prefer other food sources, if available. We also feed them milk, which they love.
We use no antibiotics unless medically indicated. Illness associated with industrially raised animals stems mostly from the conditions in which they are raised and the food they are fed. Because our animals live outdoors and have a diverse diet, they don’t get sick.
We use no growth hormones.
Why is the ground beef so tasty?
Because our ground beef is just that: ground beef. It is the same quality beef from the steer that the steaks and roasts come from, but it is ground, packaged, and frozen. If you knew how some of the commercial ground beef was processed, you’d understand why ours tastes so good. Check out the NY Times article for more details on processing.
What is your return policy?
Unfortunately, once the meat leaves our hands we can not offer a refund. However, in the unlikely event that you are unsatisfied after receiving your first share pick up, please contact us.
Can I pay by credit card?
We now offer the option to pay by credit card and the process seems to being working very well, but if you have any troubles, please contact us.
Payment option may be for the full share, or if you prefer, you may have your card charged for three monthly installments. We use a secure credit card processing site, so we retain none of your credit card information. When you fill out your order and hit submit, you will transfer to the card processor and then will be returned to our homepage once the transaction is complete. If you wish to pay by credit card, please proceed to the order form.
